This is a free event, open to the public. ABOUTAnika Kildegaard and Noa Even are Audra, a Philadelphia-based duo exploring the dynamic interplay and sonic intersections between soprano voice and saxophone. They intentionally curate programs that demonstrate a wide range of aesthetics, combine their instruments in surprising ways, and invite listeners to experience something truly new. As part of the Haverford Music & Conversation series, Audra will present an evocative evening of contemporary music for voice and saxophone, including two world premieres. While some of the works on the program meld the duo into a sort of hyper-instrument, others bring the voice to the forefront as a story-teller. From spacious and meditative to virtuosic and humorous, this collection of music highlights just how special the combination of voice and saxophone can be. The program will feature new works by Hong-Da Chin and Emily Koh, composed specifically for Audra, alongside music by Karin Rehnqvist, Cecilia McDowall, Gelsey Bell, Meredith Monk, and Thomas Kessler. Her specialties range from immigrant and urban place-based folklife, to grassroots fundraising and non-profit management. Naomi is the founding Executive Director of Los Herederos, a media arts non-profit dedicated to inheriting culture in the digital age. She is also an adjunct professor at the New School. Her practice centers around interdisciplinary ethnography and working collaboratively in communities to encourage meaningful social transformation via the folk and traditional arts. It is her deeply held belief that local knowledge both sustains communities and advances the quality of urban life. Her public folklore work, media publications, and writing deal extensively with issues of ethnic identity, political economy and cultural sustainability, transmedia storytelling and documentation, and exploring new models for teaching public folklore and ethnomusicology. Naomi holds an MA in Ethnomusicology from Columbia University and a BA from Bowdoin College. She is a Board Member of the Mencius Society for the Arts in Manhattan’s Chinatown neighborhood, Kritya Foundation, and serves on the Nominating Committee and as the co-chair of the Cultural Diversity Committee of the American Folklore Society. Peruvian drummer and percussionist, Hector Morales has combined national and international performance for the past 20 years with his work as a teaching artist in the Tri-State area. Morales has taught countless music residencies primarily in Afro-Peruvian, Latin, and Urban Percussion through leading arts organizations in the tri-state area. In 2015, he received the “Artist Of The Year” award from Young Audiences NJEP, and in 2023, he was inducted into the “People’s Hall Of Fame” and received the "Token Of Appreciation" award by City Lore. In this same year, he also became a recipient of a Heritage Fellowship Award by the NJ State Council On The Arts. His credits include creating curriculum for the NYC Department of Education, leading professional developments for music educators, and serving as grant panelist for different art councils at the local and state level. He currently co-teaches a course on Performing and Teaching World Music at William Paterson University.Héctor Ferreyra, professionally known as "Jereto," has dedicated his life to preserving and sharing the rich traditions of Afro-Peruvian music and Afro-Caribbean rhythms. His journey as a musician began in the famed "Callejón del Buque," a cultural hub where he nurtured his passion for percussion. At the young age of 10, Jereto made his first public performance at La Peña Valentina, showcasing his talent on the cajón and bongó. It was here that he earned his artistic moniker, "Jereto," a name that has become synonymous with mastery in Afro-Peruvian percussion. In 1991, Jereto joined the world-renowned Ballet Perú Negro, participating in their celebrated tour of Mexico. This experience deepened his understanding of Afro-Peruvian rhythms and dances, shaping his identity as both a performer and cultural advocate. The following year marked the start of his professional career in Peruvian salsa, performing with esteemed orchestras such as Raza Latina, La Novel, and Camagüey. In 1997, Jereto expanded his repertoire by joining the Cuban orchestra Los Conquistadores de la Salsa, where he honed his skills in Afro-Cuban rhythms and techniques. Jereto's versatility and expertise propelled him to international acclaim, performing in the U.S. and Europe with notable Peruvian-Cuban orchestras such as A Conquistar and La Timba Criolla. These experiences solidified his reputation as a leading figure in the fusion of Afro-Peruvian music with global influences. For the past 15 years, Jereto has been based in the United States, where he continues to promote Afro-Peruvian folklore and rhythms as an independent musician. His collaborations include performances with celebrated artists and groups such as the Pedrito Martínez Group, Tony Succar, Gabriel Alegría Afro Peruvian Sextet, Afro Andean Funk, the Afro-Peruvian Ensemble, and many more.

Music & Conversation: The Afro-Peruvian Ensemble

7:00 PM to 8:30 PM - ROB ROB 100 Jaharis Recital Hall: “…a superb group of authoritative musicians...
