In
“Crossing Borders,” students explored geographic, linguistic, social,
and racial border crossing through literature. After reading Aphra
Behn’s Oroonoko (1688), a novella by a white woman about an African
prince who is forced into slavery, written before the term
“abolitionist” existed, students explored Haverford’s collection of rare
books, manuscripts, and maps related to transatlantic travel, the slave
trade, and abolition. This exhibit explores the themes of authorship,
perspective, and abolitionism in a global context through engagement
with Behn’s novel and Haverford’s rare materials.
