“See the steeple pine

The hills as old as time

Soon to be put to the test

To be whipped by the winds of the West.”

Today we have become reliant on digital media to convey stories and histories. In countries like the United Kingdom, ancient ruins and forests lie quietly as highways crawl over them. Now Britain is mired in political turmoil, and the days of the ruined kingdoms seem very far away.

"When the streets are cold and lonely

And the cars they burn below me

Are you all alone?

Are you made of stone?"

Do we still need these physical experiences to experience history? In Stone Circle, Andrew Lummus ’21 draws on diverse inspirations ranging from neolithic architecture to Madchester pop music to think through our tactile, embodied relationship with history.

Quotes from Ian Brown of the Stone Roses, "Waterfall" and "Made of Stone," from The Stone Roses.
