The Homoerotics of Abduction, Conversion, and Race
in the Early Modern Mediterranean

This talk will comparatively trace English and Ottoman
representations of abductions and conversions with a focus on
the beautiful, and often racially differentiated, abducted youths
who were objects of cross-cultural circulations generated by
imperial hierarchies in the greater Mediterranean space.
Dr. Abdulhamit Arvas is Assistant Professor of English at the University of
Pennsylvania. His research and teaching focus on early modern literature and culture,
comparative histories of sexuality and race, queer theory, cross-cultural encounters,
and Islam in the Renaissance.
