Beginning as a successful Andrew W. Mellon Foundation Hanna Holborn Gray proposal, the Senior Essay that Christin Mulligan wrote became the basis of her MA thesis, and once part of that was revised for inclusion in a journal, it became a chapter of her dissertation and later her book. For the past sixteen years, she has been engaging with these concerns in various fora. If this seems like a fairly-traditional linear progression, it most certainly was not. In this talk, she shifts between stages of her life and her formative education at the bi-co to illustrate how the challenging presumption, necessary acquisition, and essential maintenance of certain cultural competencies, epistemologies, and ideologies borne of and hard won in her own experience being as the Bryn Mawr Annual Fund’s campaign used to quip, both a challenging woman and a part of challenging women, led me to research in places as far afield as the so-called “Irish Riviera” communities of the Jersey shore to Galway Bay and back.
In so doing, she establishes the paradigms that led to collaboratively expanding her research and outreach to offer advocacy and access through Penn Neurpsychiatry’s HeadsUp Program to culturally-sensitive and neurodiverse-inclusive interdisciplinary “translational” arts-and-humanities mental health clinical interventions, curricular offerings, and sociocultural praxis to under-represented populations in informed community settings and to remediate misinformation amongst the general public about serious mental illness (SMI) and early psychosis (EP) in light of historical and current violence.
